The leadership of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions is expected to meet today to discuss details of a planned campaign against pay cuts and job losses in both the public and private sectors. The ICTU executive is expected to discuss a range of options, including a national day of protest. The unions had planned a campaign of action in March in protest at the way the Government and employers were responding to the financial crisis. The campaign was called off after the unions were invited into partnership talks on an economic recovery plan that eventually proved fruitless. The new campaign being considered by ICTU is designed to highlight worker opposition to pay cuts in the public and private sectors, as well as ongoing job losses and planned cuts in public services. The IMPACT trade union is already balloting its members in the public service on possible strike action should the Government announce further pay cuts in this December's budget.
