Champion Sports was unavailable for comment last week on industry speculation that it was in talks about a possible disposal of the group to UK sportswear retailer JD Sports. Champion was bought by a consortium of businessmen, including Bernard Somers and Terry Sweeney, in 2007 from property developer Paddy McKillen and retailer Paul McGlade for a reported €60m.
