Trading may be difficult but there has been no shortage of new models arriving on the forecourts during the year. There were over 30 models entered into the most prestigious motoring event of the year, the Continental Irish car of the year 2010. The decision of the voting panel of the Irish Motoring Writers Association will be announced on Thursday 26 November.
From small economy models offering good value for money to the luxury end of the market, all cars are assessed on a basis of safety, new innovation, pricing, styling and above all value for money. In fact, during the year many importers were able to lower prices because engines have become efficient and attract low taxes. After early voting, 10 models are still in contention for the most sought after title. They are the Honda Accord, Honda Jazz, Kia Soul, Mercedes Benz E – Class, Opel Insignia, Peugeot 3008, Renault Scenic, Renault Kangoo Kar, VW Golf and VW polo.
Following the successful creation and category winners, last year's awards will also be given this year. Contenders for best small car are Honda Jazz and VW Polo; Best family car, Opel Insignia and VW Golf; Best MPV, Renault Kangoo and Renault Scenic; Best SUV/Crossover, Kia soul and Peugeot 3008 and best Luxury/Sports car, Honda Accord and Mercedes Benz. "The shortlisted cars include some great models with a mix of exciting new versions of old nameplates and some imaginative new concepts. This year's contest is shaping up to be an exciting one," said Paddy Murphy, general manager of
Continental.
