Citroen has now become one of the top European designers of small and medium cars. The Picasso and the new C3 Picasso show what their engineers are capable of – style combined with practicality and, above all, good use of space.
Newcomer to the ranks is the C3, a super-mini with a mission. The task is to be so impressive that it will beat the two million worldwide sales of the outgoing model. Space is a strong feature and the quality of materials used is also impressive.
Citroen is now operated directly through the PSA group with new headquarters in Dublin and the new model which arrives here early next year gives an opportunity for an impressive start. The C3 Picasso is also due here shortly.
Like all modern super-mini models the C3 is bigger and gets the biggest windscreen of any car in its class. In fact, at 1.35 metres long, it is considerably bigger than any windscreen on a medium or large saloon. It cuts deep into the roof to give that 'outdoors' feeling as you drive along. Front seat passengers benefit most but it gives a very airy feeling for those in the rear also.
The impression created is that you are travelling in a much bigger car. The glass reflects the sun but for those who want a more cosy atmosphere a screen can be pulled down.
The cute curvy look of the original is still evident but the styling is now more sophisticated and should win new friends for Citroen in a market segment that has strong competition from models such as the new VW Polo and Ford Fiesta.
Apart from the huge windscreen/glass roof the biggest suprise is the big interior space, considering the compact exterior dimensions. This is helped by the clever dash design that allows the front seat passenger to move 8cms forward to give more rear legroom front and rear. The 300 litre boot can be extended by dropping the 40/60 split rear seat at the flick of a lever.
Improved seats and materials adds to a refined feel.
The C3 gets two 1.4 litre engines – a 75 bhp petrol and 70 bhp diesel unit which are well suited to a car this size for economy. There are two levels of trim VT and VTR+, which gets the big panoramic windscreen.
