A standard production model VW Passat Bluemotion has covered a world record-breaking 1,527 miles on a single tank of fuel. The Guinness World Records Organisation has recognised the drive as a record-beating distance.
Driven in France and Britain by journalist Gavin Conway, the Volkswagen averaged 89.83mpg and 45mph over three days of the drive. VW gives the Passat Bluemotion's official economy for city and country driving as 64.2mpg.
The high-economy model is powered by a 1.6-litre common-rail diesel engine, stop/start technology, a transmission geared for economy and aerodynamic changes including a lower ride height and special tyres.
The Passat run was overseen by the AA and breaks a record set in 2002 by an Australian couple who drove a Peugeot 406 diesel 1,459 miles on one tank.
This year VW launched BlueMotion models in Ireland in the Polo, Golf and Passat which have gained a good reputation for economy and low emissions.
