BRITISH electrical retailer DSG, which owns brands including Dixons, Currys and PC World, has indicated that it remains committed to its Irish operations despite recent shop closures.

The company has shut its Currys outlets in Drogheda, Co Louth, and The Square, Tallaght, due to declining sales. The Tallaght shop will reopen next month as PC World in an attempt to revive customer numbers. However, the company has confirmed that the Drogheda closure is permanent.

"The Drogheda closure is the first occasion since coming to Ireland in the 1990s that the firm has had to shut a store. While the closure is regrettable, the company could no longer ignore the fact that the store was not trading at a level that justified continuing investment," it said.

The shop, at the Scotch Hall shopping centre, opened at the height of the boom in 2005. DSG said staff would be offered a redundancy package or alternative jobs in the group. It said it hoped sales would increase at Tallaght after its conversion into a computer shop.
