Irish featherweight David Oliver Joyce collected his second European Union Championships gold medal in a row in Odense, Denmark yesterday following an impressive 8-2 win over Sandro Schaer of Germany. Kilkenny middleweight Darren O'Neill claimed his first EU title after chalking up an easy 16-2 victory over Stephen Alms of Denmark at the Odense Sports Centre.
But flyweight Declan Geraghty and defending bantamweight John Joe Nevin had to settle for silver after they were beaten 13-3 by England's Khalid Yafai and 9-7 by Germany's Denis Makarov. Donegal welterweight Willie McLaughlin also had to accept second best after he lost out 12-4 to Balaza Bacskai of Hungary. Joyce, who won 57Kg gold at the 2008 EU's in Poland, was in control throughout his bout and was ahead at the end of the first two rounds before having his hand raised in victory. O'Neill meanwhile, was always on top against Alms and was finding his target well.
The entire nine-man Irish squad will be taking home medals from Denmark with Ken Egan, Eric Donovan and Philip Sutcliffe all winning bronze courtesy of their semi-final placings. Egan slipped to a surprise 7-6 semi-final to Hungarian light heavyweight Imre Szello – an opponent he beat three times in the past – last Thursday. Con Sheehan was the last Irish boxer in action in yesterday's finals. The heavyweight was in against Spaniard Juan Augustin Aleman.
