Art Connoisseur caused a major upset when repelling a global challenge to win the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot yesterday. Last season's Coventry Stakes victor bounced back to form to take the sprint prize at odds of 20-1. The three-year-old, trained by Michael Bell and ridden by Tom Queally, held the late challenge of American raider Cannonball. Lesson In Humility was a brave third.
Bell said: "He was second to Mastercraftsman in Ireland last year, then he fractured a cannonbone in the Gimcrack. I would have been more confident but a month ago he popped a splint. He swam twice a day, then he came back in and has been cantering for a fortnight. I thought he was a boy against men, but he answered every call."
Bronze Cannon broke the heart of Frankie Dettori followers as he got up in the dying strides to deny Campanologist in the Hardwicke Stakes . Campanologist looked all over the winner when he hit the front two furlongs out, but Jimmy Fortune brought the 8-1 shot through late to snatch the spoils. Fortune said: "They went very quick early, and I was happy to sit where I was. He has a big heart this horse."
