Leinster will wait until this afternoon to fully assess the extent of the injury that forced Brian O'Driscoll off during their 38-22 Heineken Cup victory over Racing Metro at the RDS yesterday. O'Driscoll limped from the field to be replaced by Fergus McFadden in the 57th minute and is thought to be a serious doubt for Leinster's second match in the competition against Saracens at Wembley next Saturday. "It looks like a hamstring," said Leinster coach Joe Schmidt. "That obviously could have consequences for next week."
O'Driscoll went off at what looked likely to be a significant point in the game, with Racing having only just hauled themselves back into contention by closing a 17-point margin to seven in the space of just eight minutes. But to their credit Leinster dug in and put a further two tries on the board, the second of them coming from McFadden himself with the last move of the game. Schmidt was delighted with the way his team quelled the French side's mini-rebellion.
"I thought we got some great leadership from Jamie Heaslip along with Seán O'Brien again defensively," said Schmidt. "I think you're starting to see a little more defensively from the likes of Mike Ross and Dev Toner – they stood up as well. Those are guys who we probably hadn't seen perform in that manner so far this season. We converted a couple of good chances to keep that gap because we knew they would come back at us. Against Toulouse last week they came back from almost 20 points down and we were conscious that we couldn't let them get back into the game. So it was good to see that composure on our part to keep them out."
