The Rosminians have become the latest religious order to seek to develop housing on their land.

The congregation, formally known as the Institute of Charity, has published plans to develop nearly 360 homes on 7.3 acres of its 25 acres of land at St Joseph's Centre for children with visual impairment at Grace Park Road in Drumcondra, Dublin 9. A therapy, braille and vocational skills building, a pre-school and primary school, a crèche and a 3.13-acre public park and playground are planned.

The order is expected to sell the land where housing is to be built if planning permission is granted. Some existing buildings will be demolished if the plan gets the go-ahead while others will be conserved.

Last month, St Joseph's Centre for the Visually Impaired announced that a home for 14 elderly visually impaired men was to close as the building does not meet standards. The centre had taken over the running of the building from the Rosminian Fathers last June.
