A NEW-BORN baby boy was found abandoned in Dublin City Centre yesterday afternoon. The baby, wrapped in tinfoil, was placed in a bag and left at a bus stop on Clanbrassil Street. He was found by passers-by at lunchtime yesterday and taken to the Coombe hospital, where he was said to be in good health.

Gardaí at Kevin Street are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and have said there is a possibility that the child's mother waited in the vicinity of the area until the baby was discovered.

They have appealed for the mother to make contact with them, as there may be concerns about her health. They said she will be treated with the "utmost compassion and sensitivity".

The discovery of the child comes amidst freezing temperatures, with last night being confirmed as one of the coldest of 2004.
