Gerald McCarthy has resigned from his position as Cork senior hurling manager, ending a prolonged stand-off with the striking 2008 panel. In a statement last night, McCarthy said he had decided to stand down after receiving death threats related to the stand-off. He used the occasion to lash out at the striking 2008 players, accusing them of dishonouring the Cork jersey and refusing to enter into dialogue. McCarthy also paid tribute to the commitment of the new crop of players he recruited for the 2009 season. Speaking last night, Cork County Board vice chairman Bob Ryan promised that structures would be put in place to ensure no repeat of the recent crisis.
