Discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have seen average customer spend rise by 7% even as they cut prices during the year.
Customers are now spending €166 a quarter in the shops, according to data from Kantar Worldpanel for the three months ending 13 June. During the same quarter last year, average spend was €155.
The growth in spending comes as both Aldi and Lidl increase their market share significantly.
Aldi's share of the take-home grocery market increased this year by nearly 20%, to 3.2%, compared to the previous year.
Lidl's market share has risen 10% and now stands at 5.5% of the total market for the same period.
Superquinn has also seen strong consumer spending growth. The average customer spent €338 over the quarter, up from €274 in the same period last year.
Spending at symbol groups fell from €169 to €156, and Supervalu saw average customer spend fall from €437 to €421.
Tesco customers spent €428 during the three-month period, the same amount as last year, while Dunnes Stores saw spend per shopper drop from €451 in the second quarter of 2009 to €426 in the second quarter of 2010.
