Fabia Combi: the latest version includes 300 litres of luggage space

Skoda's new Fabia for 2011 has already arrived and has improved exterior design, and a new engine lineup.

It is generally agreed that Skoda's manufacturing plants produce some of the best VWs in the world. While Seat have more stylish models, Skoda is catching up. The new Fabia has a more sophisticated look with a reworked front end, new grille, headlamps and a revised bumper arrangement. The changes see stronger lines across the nose to create a Skoda family look more in tune with Octavia and Superb models. The Fabia looks stronger, wider and lower than the outgoing model.

There is a new entertainment system and steering wheel controls. There is a new touch-screen Satellite Navigation Systems and MDI (Mobile Device Interface) for use with iPods, USBs and Mini-USBs.

The hatchback has 300 litres of luggage space extending to 1,163 litres with rear seats folded. The Fabia also offers a practical estate version that can compete with many larger family cars.

New engines include a new four-cylinder petrol unit which uses the latest direct petrol injection and turbo-charging technology to produce more power while consuming less fuel. Two new diesel engines are offered – a four-cylinder, common-rail 1.6 TDI units that produces 70bhp and a more powerful version with 90bhp. Emissions have been reduced considerably with Band-A emission category achieved by both diesel options and the 1.2 TSI 85bhp petrol.

The entry level Classic model includes remote central locking and four airbags while the Ambiente version includes alloy wheels. The Elegance model has leather steering wheels, BlueTooth phone connection, cruise control and air-conditioning.

Pricing starts from €12,265 for the 1.2, 60bhp Classic model. Skoda will launch the sporty 1.4 TSI Fabia RS model later this year.
