I'm looking for someone to rent me a cheap camper-van so I can go on a surf trip across Europe this summer. But it won't be all play. I'll be working as well. Surf-journey type films have always fascinated me and now I've decided to have a go at making one myself.
At the moment I'm finishing a Media degree in Maynooth. I've made plenty of short films already but I want to take it to the next level and make my first feature. With the economic situation in Ireland being far from great at the moment, I figured I really need to take things into my own hands and just go for it. I'm going to produce and direct the film. I know that it's going to be a pretty big adventure for me but I'm hoping to get some backing from a production company. Maybe eventually, I'll even get a sponsor on board.
I've been surfing badly since I was 17. I have my own light green 7 foot mini-mal from Power Source Boards, which I really love, so I feel compelled to surf it. I love everything sea and coast related and managed to work on the surfing series Cois Farraige which was one of the best experiences of my life. I've also produced and shot a documentary for Christian Surfers Ireland.
From my own experiences of travelling around Ireland to surf, I've found that it's growing more and more in popularity with every day that passes. Even from the time when I was doing the Cois Farraige series until today, the amount of surfers out on the water has definitely increased. I suppose it requires very little equipment compared to other water sports and it's a great activity. Stuff a few mates in a car, head off to the coast and have a fun weekend. With the promotion of the sport across Ireland and success of so many surf schools and clubs, the profile of surfing will only continue to rise. I think it's great that kids are getting into it because it really is more than a sport. It's a way of life.
I haven't travelled abroad to surf as much as I would like to, so the trip across Europe will be amazing. I first surfed in the Canary Islands and did a lot in the East Coast of the States. I saw Joel Tudor paddle boarding in Montauk which was pretty cool.
I know that lots of people have made surf documentaries already but I'd like to make something that incorporates surfing and a screenplay, which will add a little drama. It's not going to be easy though. Technically, surf filming can be incredibly tricky with all the cameras and jet skis needed, as well as the requirement for the crew to be excellent swimmers but hopefully I'll get some enthusiastic people on board who are up for a challenge.
The film Waveriders was a huge inspiration for me and my work and has encouraged me try and do my own thing. Films like Once also give me hope. I read an interview with John Carney recently about making the film and a piece of advice he gave really stuck with me. He said that "you can make a hundred short films but making a feature is something actually financially viable". So that's what I'm going to do.
As of yet people are slow to part with their coveted campers, but maybe the ad will throw up something eventually. I've had a few replies because of the film element to the ad but nothing really concrete. I'm sure a few mates will be calling me up to come along on the trip once they read this. There definitely won't be a shortage in that regard.
I've worked on a few surf-related projects before but this one is going to be quite an adventure. I'm hoping that if all of this goes to plan, the world will be my oyster.
