Back to school and back to crèche time has started with a vengeance and for the less than organised of mums (that's me included by the way) it means lots of rushing around and gathering up of fun-size winter wardrobes. If you have a little one still malleable enough to get into whatever you buy her/him, lucky you and enjoy it while you can. If not, it's no doubt getting more and more difficult convincing them that Heatons or Dunnes are cool enough for school. Not saying that you should blow the budget on a few kiddies' clothes but the new brands in Brown Thomas this season are pretty tempting and are worth looking at, even just for inspiration. With Jean Paul Gaultier Junior, Martha Francois Girbaud and Bonpoint among new designer names, my stand-out favourite is definitely Philip Lim, pictured. All funky smocks, leggings and biker boots – have a look, take some style notes and if you need to you can find similar at H+M or Zara.
If you're struggling to feel on-trend enough wearing ballet flats for the fourth year running but can't bear the thought of anything with a heel, try a pair of comfy light lace-ups. These ones from Penneys are recession friendly as it gets at just €9
How cute is this sheeny, shiny heart-shaped bag? It would jazz up the simplest of cocktail dresses and glam up any jeans and flats combo. It's €22 at Awear.
* Love the idea of renting rather than buying special occasion gowns, so when I heard that expert buyer Suzanne Hourican (previously of BTs) had opened a new destination designer-for-rental store, I was all over the idea. It's called Covet, it's on the fop floor of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre in Dublin and it's fab. Tel: 01 679 9313; www.covet.ie.
* River Island launches a maternity wear collection for what it calls the 'preganista' (cringe) this month. Haven't yet seen the quality of what it has on offer but the collection is definitely on trend and directional – think sequin harem pants, wet-look leggings and grungy knitwear and you get the picture. Prices start at €27.
* The high street shops are certainly fighting for business right now, and Oasis is right up there with the new ideas, which include a new 'Fashionably Late' event of 'high heels and cocktails' this September. While supping cocktails and gossiping with friends, you will be treated to a personal styling appointments on special evenings in its Cork and Dublin flagship stores.
