Leo Varadkar

What did you have for breakfast today?

I skipped it. I'd rather a few more minutes in bed than a nourishing breakfast. Not healthy, I know. Sometimes I have a coffee on-the-go in the car, but I end up spilling it half the time.

If you could be anywhere right now, where would it be?

Apart from a warm bed on a cold night? My local, Myos in Castleknock, or maybe Tuscany. Love the food, weather, scenery and culture. But most of all, I love to go to new places. I am probably the only person in Ireland who hasn't been to Australia. I really should go there.

What is your comfort food?

Murray Mints. Low cal and last forever. Chuppa Chups are a good substitute.

What website do you look at most?

Probably rte.ie or journal.ie for the news. I never look at my own website. There could be anything on it really.

How often do you exercise?

I try to go to the gym four times a week or if not, go for a run in the Phoenix Park.

What do you watch on TV?

Obviously all the news programmes – The Frontline, Prime Time, etc – when I'm not on them! In my downtime I like cartoons, especially South Park and Family Guy.

What Irish person do you most admire?

Michael O'Leary – if he could just tone it down a bit!

What Irish person do you least admire?

Bertie Ahern. He did a great job with the peace process and no one can take that from him, but he was controlled by vested interests and managed the economy and public finances disastrously. We'll be paying for his poor governance for a long time.

How punctual are you?

Fairly punctual. Just not first thing in the morning – I'm a night owl!

What word or phrase do you overuse?

I used to use "in reality" a lot, but after hearing myself on TV and radio a few times, I've tried to stop using it.

What is your favourite shop?

The Spar in Carpenterstown. It's open late and has everything I need.

What was the last text you sent?

Saying okay to my secretary after she texted me to say she was late.

What radio station do you listen to?

The obvious ones, but if I get a chance to listen to music, Nova or Spin.

Are you good with credit cards?

I'm good at using them! But I have them all on direct debit, so clear them every month.

What was your best holiday?

I really enjoyed visiting Israel. Both for the history and the modernity.

How long does it take you to get ready?

About 20 minutes. It used to be a lot longer but since I got the laser surgery and no longer need contacts I'm a lot quicker.

What is your biggest regret?

Not living or studying abroad for a few years. But there is still time!

What can you not live without?

My Blackberry, Diet Coke and coffee.

When did you last use public transport?

Last Sunday. I live beside the train station, so use it quite a bit.

What do you worry about?

Having so much work to do, that I won't get it done properly.

Who did you last vote for?

Eithne Loftus – an excellent councillor for Castleknock – and Gay Mitchell MEP.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Pay off my debts, give loads to my sisters, tell no one and keep working!

What time do you go to bed at?

About 2 or 3am. I work best at night.
