Harry Kane has emphasized that Thomas Tuchel’s pointed critique of England’s performance following their quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami stemmed from their inability to transfer their training excellence to actual match situations.
The England captain noted that Tuchel’s comments were likely aimed at keeping the players alert ahead of their semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday. Kane remarked, “he knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that … he’s trying to drag it out of us”
Throughout the tournament, Tuchel has expressed frustration at the team’s lack of cohesion and composure. After the match against Norway, he openly stated his dissatisfaction with the performance “Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, [Martin] Ødegaard, [Antonio] Nusa, [Alexander] Sørloth.” pointing out the numerous technical errors, a deficiency in pace, and claiming the team had been “When he sees us train and sees the closeness and what we can do, especially with the players we have, the way we attack, our one‑on-ones and the skills … he just wants to see that version of us,”
Jude Bellingham, who netted both goals in England’s 2-1 win after extra time, reacted to Tuchel’s remarks with some irritation. “He knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that, we’re playing against good opposition and good teams. He’s trying to drag it out of us and we know ourselves we have another level that we can reach. “We haven’t seen that yet. We’ve shown it in glimpses. Against Norway it was in glimpses. We haven’t had full control that we would like and I feel we can have. But at this stage of the tournament you are playing against the best teams in the world. We’ll be playing against one of the best teams in the world in the semi-final. “The most pleasing thing is that we are in a semi-final and we still feel like we can improve. I don’t think it is something to get really over the top about. We are showing a lot of good things – the way the boys defended as a team against Norway, the way we attacked … we still had some really good moments. And Jude stepped up for us with another couple of goals.” he responded, elaborating in another interview, “I know this is going to be a topic from now until the next game,”
Tuchel’s approach, while bold, is not surprising given his reputation for frankness and his relentless pursuit of perfection. Kane, however, sought to downplay any tension. “We know we can play better but ultimately we are in a semi-final of the World Cup and that has not always been the case for this national team so we have to enjoy it. “It was tough out there against Norway with the heat and humidity. We can play better on the ball. We know that for sure. But right now we want to enjoy this. The preparation will come for the next game and we will try to improve with the ball as much as possible. “This has been an extremely successful era of our national team, getting to semi-finals and finals, and we want to get over the line. That is the missing piece now. We’ve been together for six weeks and shown every bit of desire for the badge. We’re going to need an even bigger push now for the last week or so.” Kane explained. “He’s trying to drag it out of us and we know ourselves we have another level that we can reach.”
Kane acknowledged that the team has yet to realize their full potential. “We haven’t seen that yet. We’ve shown it in glimpses. Against Norway it was in glimpses,” he admitted. “We still had some really good moments. And Jude stepped up for us with another couple of goals.”
Before the match against Norway, Tuchel had stated that England “need to play better,” identifying multiple areas for improvement, including enhancing their buildup play, navigating through the opposition’s high press, spending more time in the final third, and improving effectiveness during counterpress situations.
Tuchel remarked that his players were overanalyzing their possession, causing them to miss opportunities to break through. He understands the challenges posed by the limited preparation time available to international teams compared to clubs, yet he finds those limitations frustrating.
“I know this is going to be a topic from now until the next game,” Kane said. “We know we can play better but ultimately we are in a semi-final of the World Cup and that has not always been the case for this national team so we have to enjoy it.”
