It must have been sometime last winter, between the five inches of snow and our toes turning to ice, that designers clicked the importance of winter cosiness and decided that heavy shearling was due a comeback. And now, from the Burberry boots that everyone wants, to aviator jackets, parkas and coats we're seeing everywhere, it looks like we're set for a winter that's going to look a little bit like something out of the Amelia Earhart movie. Except a little less glamorous perhaps.
Until all this new fashion, I had quite fuzzy memories of shearling, beginning with the sheepskin-lined gloves my granny used to wear, bless her, back in the days when central heating wasn't a given and you really did need to wrap up for cold weather. Then there were the sheepskin booties that dropped through the door recently in a pretty package for my newborn daughter, and the Uggs I still snuggle into on duvet days – for me, sheepskin was all about home and nesting rather than making any kind of fashion statement.
It all kicked off on the catwalk, of course, but as the blogging word went viral and the high street soon grasped the novelty, the shops are heaving with everything from shearling hats and jackets to furlined gloves and bags. One of the key shoe stories for the new season, heels, wedges, boots and even clogs are being lined in this new fabric.
This aviator jacket from Acne at Brown Thomas is just one of the many variations of flight jackets that we're seeing at the moment and I like the fact it has a structured belted form – so at least you look like you still have a waist underneath all that bulk. Wear it with a mini and opaques and statement boots on a night out or for everyday with skinnies or over that other seasonal must have – the maxi skirt. Now all we need to do is cross our fingers for another cold winter. Did I really just wish for that?
