For the thousands of Germans who contribute to the global Teutonic reputation for unabashedly letting it all hang out, it is little short of a dream come true – a hotel in which clothing is strictly verboten.
The Hotel Rosengarten, which claims to be the world's first nudist-only hotel, is scheduled to open its doors to a stripped-down public later this month in the Black Forest town of Freudenstadt. Those caught wearing clothes at breakfast will be shown the door.
Yet to avoid any potential embarrassments, the regulations in the hotel rulebook state categorically that sexual harassment "will not be tolerated" and that when it comes to the establishment's communal areas, "sexual acts are strictly prohibited". The project is masterminded by 57-year-old Frieder Haferkorn, a veteran nudist, trained baker and professional cook.
Like many aficionados, he took to nudity out of curiosity as a young man but soon found the experience liberating. "If you live in a highly regulated country like ours," he said in a telephone interview, "getting your clothes off comes as a relief."
Haferkorn says while many hotels in Germany have facilities for nudists such as naked wellness areas, his will be the first to be completely clothes-free: "Visitors will check in to their rooms, take their clothes off, and spend the rest of their stay with us like that," he said. "We won't allow guests to wear clothes in the restaurant."
The Hotel Rosengarten is a modern hotel on the edge of Freudenstadt, overlooking the Black Forest. It is currently used mainly by hikers; Haferkorn aims to take over the lease later this month and begin catering for a naturist-only clientele. He says under his management the hotel will provide a massage service, solarium and sauna. Families with children will be welcome and there are plans for a large playground in the grounds.
"We want to create a relaxing environment in which like-minded people can enjoy a natural environment in complete nudity," Haferkorn said. "Lots of people try to portray nudity as something smutty, but we aim to show that it is something completely natural." Haferkorn said his hotel's website had been inundated with booking requests.
Germany has an estimated 800,000 nudists, most of whom belong to the country's 600-plus FKK, or "free body culture" clubs, which organise nude sports and naked camping trips. In the former Communist East Germany, nudity was first outlawed, and then celebrated and widely practised. For the authorities it was considered a demonstration of free-thinking socialist superiority over the prudish west.
Freudenstadt's tourist board has mixed feelings about the town's naked-only hotel. "It is an unusual concept, however I think I would have preferred a normal hotel," said Michael Krause, the town's director of tourism.
Haferkorn has high hopes that the Rosengarten will continue to attract hiking visitors. However if they should attempt a nude walk across the nearby Swiss border, they could be arrested. In an attempt to clamp down on nudity on its mountain trails, a Swiss village recently passed a law banning the practice.
