Two German men have set up a magazine dedicated solely to their love of Ireland and have seen their circulation soar with enthusiastic German readers.
Irland Edition, which declares itself "in love with Ireland", is for sale across Germany after being set up by the men who discovered a passion for Ireland after a series of holidays.
The magazine costs €5.90 in Germany, and features articles on our most scenic locations, favourite drinks and traditional folk music.
Wolfgang Graef, the Irish manager for the publication, said that the circulation has now reached 20,000 and is steadily rising.
"Jan Deiters is the editor in Germany, and he used to come over to his friends in Drogheda to visit an awful lot. He is crazy about the country and especially Irish music. He plays the fiddle now as well.
"It was in Drogheda he had the idea to set up a premier magazine in German about all things Irish. I am over here now and sourcing advertisements and giving Jan tips, though he comes over every month to research the latest Irish trends."
Irland Edition features whole pages dedicated to night views of Dublin city, features on events like the Rose of Tralee and Riverdance as well as reviews of Irish books such as Angela's Ashes.
One edition features a full two-page review of Tullamore Dew, the Irish whiskey.
Graef has secured advertisements from the likes of the D Hotel in Drogheda and Guinness to help fund the publication.
After having lived and worked in Hamburg for a number of years in the past it is my experience that the Germans generally view the Irish with a mix of bemusment and bewilderment.
They enjoy travelling to Ireland to get drunk and watching the little pixies sing and dance, but would never dream of living this way in their own real world, and are generally very happy to go home to"normality"
As for being in love with the Irish,I often wonder where this idea came from,I have concluded it was invented by the Irish themselves.
Sorry to blow the illusion but nobody loves you and they never really did!
