I object strongly to the tone of Michael Clifford's article on Independent TDs (News, 13 December). It is misleading and gives the impression that we do not care about "developing values, running the country or shaping a nation". We are not all the same. Deputy Joe Behan and I voted against the budget, stood by the most vulnerable in society and supported our public sector workers. This was not mentioned in the article. I voted on what was in the document.
In relation to "massaging their constituencies", I have always pushed national issues too. In fact, one major issue that I am fighting for is the urgent need for a national cystic fibrosis unit in St Vincent's Hospital. This is not in my constituency but I will do all in my power to see that it happens. It is also important to actively support our constituents and I make no apology for that type of work. Independent TDs are a credible alternative to political-party neglect. We are only answerable to the citizens and taxpayers. We are not accountable to any political party or vested interests.
Independent voices in Irish politics will always try to make a positive contribution to our country.
