Eight months ago, I wrote to your newspaper pointing out some serious inaccuracies in an article by Diarmuid Doyle on the Green Party's performance in government. Last Sunday, he was at it again.
Had your correspondent read my initial letter, he would have seen that Green Party achievements in government would not have "been required by European law anyway". If anything, Europe is looking to us to follow our lead.
The ban on incandescent lightbulbs, due to take effect this September, is to be rolled out across every country in the EU. Our Cycle to Work Scheme is getting hundreds of people on their bikes every day. Motorists are driving cleaner, greener cars. Home owners are insulating their homes and cutting their energy costs. And 10,000 new green jobs are being created this year.
If "crumbs from the cabinet table" include a directly elected mayor for Dublin, a new planning bill to halt erroneous planning, local government reform, new laws on noise and political and financial reform, then I for one, am happy to sweep up these "crumbs" and continue with the business of the betterment of this country.
I repeat my offer from eight months ago: if Mr Doyle needs any help in checking his facts before he writes his next article on the Greens – I am happy to help.
Mary White TD,
Green Party Deputy Leader.
