Enya: 'I've had to deal with stalking from the beginning'

A man accused of stalking the reclusive singer Enya is on the run and will be arrested on sight by gardaí after he failed to turn up at a recent court appearance.

Roger Jones (62) from England has been charged with stalking the reclusive singer at her plush Dalkey home between March and July last year – but did not appear in court to answer the charges.

A bench warrant was issued for Jones's arrest after his no-show at a scheduled hearing in Dún Laoghaire District Court on 25 February.

A court spokesman said the warrant had not yet been executed but that it would more than likely be done so immediately, on the discovery of the defendant's whereabouts.

During the sitting the court was told Jones had been regularly attending Newcastle Hospital as an outpatient.

However, prosecuting guard Declan Hartley had checked the defendant's attendance records and discovered that he had not been there since last December.

Jones, with an address at Grand Parade, West Hoe, Plymouth, England, is also thought to have spent some time in a homeless shelter in James Street in Dublin.

Judge Clare Leonard granted a bench warrant for Jones's arrest and said she was unable to consider his fitness as he had not been attending his medical appointments.

Jones first appeared before Dún Laoghaire district court in early December last on the charges and was released on €500 bail by judge Hugh O'Donnell.

Enya, who is estimated to be worth more than €100m, has in the past invested in security at her castle home.

In an unrelated incident in 2005, it was reported that she escaped to a 'panic room' inside the building following two break-ins, and waited there, on one occasion, for a couple of hours for help to arrive.

Commenting on those experiences in a rare interview last year, the Donegal native said: "I've had to deal with stalking from the beginning.

"It's necessary not to focus on it because then you get very paranoid; you close yourself away.

"Anyone in the street can have a stalker. It's not because I'm famous, but because I'm more private than most celebrities."
