A lucky resident of Madrid is the winner of a world record Euromillions lottery prize of €126m. The ticket, which had all seven winning numbers, was bought in a lottery office in Calle Alcala in the centre of the Spanish capital.
If the ticket belonged to a single person, and not a syndicate, it would be the largest EuroMillions win, beating the €115m win in 2005 from a €2 quick-pick ticket bought by Dolores McNamara, 49, from Garryowen in Limerick.?
The mother-of-six is estimated to have collected €10m in interest since winning Europe's biggest lottery prize. The former cleaning lady at Limerick Youth Centre has continued to keep a low profile since her win.
The lottery, which takes place every Friday, pools stakes from nine countries. The main jackpot is rolled over if there is no winner.
Tickets are sold in the UK, the Irish Republic, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg.
The winning numbers were 04, 23, 24, 29, 31. The Lucky Star numbers were 08 and 09. The jackpot winner has not been identified.
Spain's El Gordo lottery, which is run just before Christmas, offers one of the biggest payouts in the world, and Spaniards are inveterate gamblers. Fruit machines stand in every bar across the land.
