I read with delight the coverage of Eamon Ó Cuív's recent speech in Foinse last weekend where he said that one Irish language organisation whose sole aim is to promote the Irish language is all that's needed. In my view, Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, Conradh na Gaeilge, Gael-Taca and Feachtas should be merged to be part of a revamped Foras na Gaeilge. I would personally allow Gael-Linn to remain as they are. It is vital though that Foras na Gaeilge gets a strong and effective marketing department. They should have a free-of-charge consultancy service for the business and voluntary sectors on how best to promote the language practically and they should have foot soldiers to work on the ground, eg, putting up Irish-language signs in businesses.
Furthermore, we should have annual marketing campaigns in the media promoting the language, not just during Seachtain na Gaeilge. They should run for perhaps two weeks a year. There was a campaign with Síle Seoige and another couple of gaeilgeoirí on MTV and our other television channels about three years ago. Why are these campaigns not annual?
Eamon Ó Cuív is continuing the legacy of Eamon de Valera in relation to the Irish language in my view– by turning a lot of people off it. If he does merge Irish language organisations into one organisation he will deserve some credit in my book.
