It was a good week for RTÉ. Ryan Tubridy's elevation to host the Late Late Show was the right decision for many reasons, not the least of which is that we should be spared the kind of discussions on politics which marred last weekend's show and a previous one which temporarily rescued senators from their well-earned anonymity.

Then it was announced that listenership to RTé radio shows (as predicted in this space last December) had increased hugely, as people turned to trusted sources of information to guide them through the recession.

The only piece of bad news – Sinéad Mulvey's exit from the Eurovision Song Contest – could easily be turned into a positive. RTé should announce that Ireland is finished with Eurovision. It's a waste of time and the station no longer has the resources for such pointless frivolity. When staffers are being asked for a pay cut, it's ridiculous to be spending money displaying our musical mediocrity to the rest of Europe.
