Rock band U2 is facing a fine from Dublin City Council for breaching noise levels on a number of occasions at their Croke Park concerts in July.

"Dublin City Council has yet to issue a decision regarding the fine which will apply for noise breaches across the three events," a spokeswoman said, adding that all other conditions attached to the Public Event Licence, which allowed the concerts to go ahead, were complied with in full.

A condition of the licence being granted was that a cash deposit of €80,000 be lodged "as a surety for maintaining noise limits and for compliance in full with conditions attached to the licence", the spokeswoman said.

Reports at the time said that the band had considered breaking the rules by playing past the 11pm curfew so that fans could get the full effect of its Claw stage. However, the group decided against it in the end.

Band manager Paul McGuinness said recently the U2 tour would not begin to make money until the end of last month because of the huge logistical costs of the stage.
