The Sinn Féin-DUP power-sharing executive at Stormont can be toppled if enough hardline unionist candidates are elected at the next Assembly elections, Traditional Unionist Voice leader Jim Allister has told his party’s annual conference.
Allister launched a blistering attack on the DUP and said “triple-jobbing, family dynasties, greed, avarice and betrayal” were the hallmarks of some politicians. He told delegates that the political system stank: “Terrorists in government, spongers in parliament. What a state our beloved province has been reduced to!”
He denounced the “toxic poison” of Sinn Féin and “that wicked duo, Adams and McGuinness”. He urged unionists not to support the DUP: “Not since the treachery of David Trimble has a unionist party been more deserving of defeat. Not just for ushering unrepentant terrorists into government but for the shame brought to public office by abuse of expenses. You don’t expect much from IRA/Sinn Féin who lived off bank robberies for years, but as unionists we do expect probity in public office.”
Allister condemned Iris Robinson “for thinking the taxpayers should buy her a Mont Blanc pen”; Willie McCrea “sitting behind his publicly funded walnut desk”; and Peter Robinson “watching the 42” TV which we all kindly bought him – he should have gone to Specsavers”. He said it was disgusting that Gerry Kelly, a convicted IRA bomber, was a junior minister responsible for victims.
Allister said his party had “stunned the political establishment” in the EU election and he looked forward to contesting the North Antrim seat, held by Ian Paisley snr.
