AIB: pen-pinching

AIB has instructed its staff to reduce the amount of stationery they use in order to cut costs because of the recession.

An email was sent out to members of staff in the credit operations section of the bank, in which about 700 staff work, instructing them of the new guidelines.

"Stationery is one of our biggest spends and we have now devised a model that is going to be piloted for the next four to six weeks," it says.

It is now understood there will be only four stationary cabinets for members of staff, and they will be locked and a close eye kept on them.

The crackdown began in recent weeks and might be extended beyond the initial six weeks should the initiative be successful in cutting costs. A spokesman for AIB said: "Cost management is a priority for AIB. In all areas of our business, there is a vigilant focus on managing costs. As at half-year 2009, costs were down 9% in the bank's Republic of Ireland division, and by 7% throughout AIB Group."

AIB could not supply figures for the amount that was spent on stationery in 2008.

It is understood many companies are now resorting to this measure and demanding staff cut down on their usage of notepads and pens in order to bring operating costs down in every area.
