John Gormley's latest insult to Democracy is very disturbing. Two weeks ago, the Green Party leader did a survey of how party members would vote on Nama at the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone. Gormley tried to hide this survey by calling it a 'preferendum'. In reality, this was a deceitful pre-vote polling of his own party members.
Based on the results of the survey, Gormley has now changed the rules of democracy by deciding only one-third of the Green Party will need to vote Yes on Nama for it to be passed at the Green Party conference on 10 October. Gormley has tried to hide this by throwing in another phony vote: two-thirds of the members will have to vote Yes to a seperate motion on staying in government.
Essentially Gormley has done a survey on how his party will vote on each motion and then changed the rules based on the results of that survey so both motions will pass. Gormley must think his party and the Irish people are completely stupid if he believes he can pull the wool over our eyes.
There is an old saying that "if you lie with dogs you get fleas". The Green's coalition with Fianna Fáil has finally robbed the Green Party of both character and integrity. The Irish people will prevail and just like the PDs before them, the Green Party will also be wiped out at the next election.
