I AM fed up with being called ignorant by "intellectuals" like Owen Corrigan. I voted 'No' last time around and I will vote 'No' again in October. Why? Because nobody has been able to articulate to me what a post-Lisbon Europe will look like. Nobody can tell me what this European project we are holding up is all about. I have seen a property bubble fuelled by low interest rates brought about by Euro membership and massive unemployment due to factories relocating to eastern Europe. I think we have had enough integration and expansion thank you very much.

If (it has to be yes)
If you can keep your head after protest voting Higgins;
And watch delusion dance a mandate jig.
If you despair opportunism spawned through misery;
And gaze at ineptness, powerless to act.
If amateur dramatics at O’Donoghue’s expenses disgust
you;
As soft reactions cloak a dread of reflecting light,
Apology, an escape for all.
If you’re befuddled by this Lisbon thing;
And dream a third option, perhaps of “maybe”.
But not make dreams your master, as you’ll need to
vote.
If you feel bullied by some egotistical economists;
And sick as tax exiles, incompetents and hypocrites dictate.
If you can bear to hear the truths of life,
Twisted by ruthless CEOs and
unelectable know-alls;
And be suspicious, as to why they care at all.
If you vote “yes” because of fear;
And not at the behest of those you cannot stand,
Nor because of others you disregard, demanding “no”;
And treat those two impostors just the same.
If terror stalks you at your country’s possible
isolation;
With them as leaders and policy makers;
Europe’s protection far distance.
Then fear be not you master, but your saviour.
If you can force your heart, and nerve, and sinew;
To vote “yes” in spite of their promoting it.
If your vote “yes” be the majority decision;
Know that should they gloat in Higginesque manner;
Their gloating would be phony and short lived.
Your legacy will out long after they’re forgotten.
Yours is this country, and everything that’s in it
And — which is more — You’ll be a Patriot, its child.
