THE TRIAL of two young men accused of murdering two Polish men in Dublin in 2007 in a screwdriver attack begins tomorrow.
Sean Keogh (20) of Vincent Street West, Inchicore, and David Curran (19) of no fixed abode, are accused of murdering Pawel Kalite (29) and Marius Szwajkos (27) on Benbulben Road, Drimnagh, in February 2007. The trial will be held at Dublin Central Criminal Court.
The trial has been delayed on several occasions. In July 2009, the families of the dead men were flown to Ireland to attend the court case only to be left "distraught" when it was postponed. Both families arrived in Dublin last week for the trial. It is expected to last two weeks.
Giollaiosa O Lideadha, defending Curran, told Justice Paul Carney last year that additional evidence had been recently served on the defence and certain tests had to be carried out on his client. Justice Paul Carney said that he was reluctant to adjourn the case as the defendants had been returned for trial almost a year ago. But he said he could not force the trial to go on and acceded to the defence application to adjourn the trial.
Gardaí have privately expressed their frustration that the double murder trial has taken so long to commence.
