Have childhood stories of leprechauns and bogey men so beguiled the people of Ireland that the most preposterous of explanations from religious leaders, politicians, business leaders and bankers are accepted without demur?

Look at Peter Robinson's self-declared clean bill of health and his arrogant dismissal of queries concerning his £5 strip of land. The church's handling of sexual abuse allegations can be compared with the state's handling of its finances. The common thread appears to be that we should accept that they know best.

The arrogance of the Quinn group in its criticism of those who have questioned the propriety of using insurance reserves to guarantee non-insurance financial exposure of the wider Quinn group has stretched the 'know best' dogma to even greater heights. Surely it ill behoves the Quinn group, given its dealings with Anglo Irish Bank, to question the need for public reassurance. Has Peter Robinson taken his cue from Seán Quinn or is it just a Northern trait to angrily dismiss any legitimate criticism of their conduct.
