It is time that the Department of Education changed its syllabus in relation to the teaching of languages in our schools. At present, French and German are the main options. In a short period of time, India and China will become the dominant powerhouses in the world. Both countries comprise over a third of the world's population, yet their languages are not taught in our schools. It is time for a change, in order that we meet the ongoing challenges that India and China will give us.

If economic reasons are what count, the best language to study for communicating with India and China is English. There are about 800 Indian language; English is the language is most widely known. The Chinese language is far more difficult than French or German, given its writing system that uses 6000 characters; count the cost before you launch such an enterprise.
