The Dublin SPCA yesterday broadly welcomed concessions made by environment minister John Gormley under the controversial Dog Breeding Establishments Bill.

Orla Aungier of Dublin SPCA said she believes the longterm introduction of microchipping is "absolutely essential".

"Traceability is essential in order to protect the consumer, to prevent the spread of disease and to enhance the credibility of responsible Irish breeders," she said.
