There was something refreshingly Irish and traditional and innocent about the marriage of Andrea Corr to Brett Desmond in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare last Friday. It could have turned into a Hello-style spectacular, but instead of selling to the highest bidder, the successful lead singer of the Corrs and the son of one of Ireland's richest men opted for an old-fashioned Catholic exchange of vows.

There were celebrities aplenty but they walked up the main road to the church without ceremony. There was glamour, there were expensive cars and big names but they came prepared for the unpredictable Irish summer with umbrellas and shawls.

Corr and Desmond posed happily for the kind of wedding shots that adorn wedding albums the length and breath of Ireland. The bride wore white and her bridesmaids looked suitably uncomfortable in lilac.

At a time when the Celtic Tiger generation is questioning who they are and what they stand for, this young couple stood out as confident role models proud of their Irish roots as they make their mark in the global scheme. Their happiness was uplifting. May they have a golden future too.
