Gardaí believe they have foiled an attempted gangland assassination linked to the Crumlin-Drimnagh feud following the arrest of a taxi driver carrying two guns on Friday night, the Sunday Tribune has learned.

Acting on high level intelligence, gardaí from Sundrive Road station stopped the taxi on Slievenamon Road in Drimnagh at about 11pm and found a Smith & Wesson handgun and a silver revolver in a package.

It is understood that gardaí believe the firearms were owned by a Dublin criminal in his 20s currently serving a lengthy prison sentence. He is the leader of a Crumlin-based gang involved in a feud with a rival drugs gang which has led to 10 murders.

Gardaí believe the man was on his way to deliver the firearms which were to be used in an assassination attempt against a senior member of the gang controlled by 'Fat' Freddie Thompson.

The taxi driver's arrest followed a lengthy surveillance operation. Investigations are ongoing and gardaí from the Organised Crime Unit are assisting local gardaí.

At least 10 people have been killed in the Crumlin-Drimnagh gang feud, which has been ongoing for over eight years.
