A GARDA Ombudsman Commission investigation into the death of a man in a garda prison cell – the first of its kind in Ireland – has been completed more than two years after the incident.

Final reports on the circumstances surrounding the death of Polish national Dariusz Dobron are currently being completed and details are to be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Meanwhile, the Sunday Tribune has learned that Dobron's wife Henryka Barbara is preparing a civil action against the state.

Sources close to the investigation have revealed that the family has been left completely in the dark over the circumstances surrounding Dobron's death.

The 42-year-old husband and father was found unconscious in Tralee garda station in June 2007 with a ligature, believed to be the cord from his tracksuit bottoms, around his neck.

The authorities had come under pressure from the Polish embassy in relation to the length of time the investigation had been taking.

Final reports on the probe are to be circulated to interested parties.
