A 26-year-old charged with the murder of a man found dead in the boot of a car last week is the son of a garda based at garda headquarters.
Stephen Penrose, of no fixed abode, appeared in Trim
District Court on Thursday charged with the murder of David Sharkey at Blackcastle, Navan, Co Meath, last Sunday night.
His father is Daniel Penrose, a long-serving and well-respected garda based at headquarters in the Phoenix Park. It is understood that his son has not lived in the
family home for several years.
Penrose, originally from north-west Dublin but staying in Navan, was remanded in custody to Cloverhill until Thursday. There was no application for bail. The court heard that he made no reply to the charge when it was put to him.
Sharkey (28) was stabbed to death and placed in the boot of his own three-series BMW last Sunday night. He was stabbed a number of times in the chest and had wounds on his hands.
Gardaí discovered his body in the crashed car at a halting site off Dunsink Lane in
Finglas, Dublin, at around 10pm last Sunday.
