A memorial garden to honour the 83 gardaí who have been killed while on duty was opened in Dublin Castle yesterday by the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, the Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy and Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern.

The names of the members who died in the service of the state will appear on the Roll of Honour and be inscribed in stone within the garden.

A specially commissioned glass sculpture commemorates the sacrifice of the families left behind while a stone monument is a tribute to all deceased members of An Garda Síochána, the Royal Irish Constabulary and the Dublin Metropolitan Police.
