THE creators of hit US TV series The West Wing are investigating whether Fine Gael breached copyright law in a new promotional video for a branch of the party's youth wing.

The promo, which can be seen on YouTube, was made for the University College Cork branch of Young Fine Gael, and depicts what it would be like to be in the party. The theme music for the political television drama plays in the background.

A spokesperson for Warner Brothers confirmed to the Sunday Tribune that the company was investigating the video and would come to a decision on whether to demand its removal in the coming days. The clip has been viewed over 2,000 times.

Against the backdrop of the emotive music, the video advertises: "The most active society on campus. No better time to get involved. A year to remember for the society and you. Debates, socials, guest speakers, weekends away. We are not just a political society, we're a social society too." Then several members of the party jump in the air in apparent ecstasy at the thought of being in Fine Gael.

Speaking about the video, chair of the UCC Young Fine Gael society Robert O'Sullivan said he had feared the use of the music might be a problem. "We haven't heard from the West Wing creators, but... it crossed our minds that there may be a problem arising from the music. If they ask us to take it down, we will of course cooperate."
