England encountered an unfriendly reception as they arrived at their hotel in Mexico City ahead of their World Cup last-16 clash against Mexico on Sunday.
The team had hoped to keep their whereabouts a secret after Mexican fans used loudspeakers, horns, and motorcycles to disrupt Ecuador’s players before their previous match, which Ecuador lost 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Upon the arrival of England’s coach, hundreds of fans had gathered outside the hotel. Many booed while others chanted “The schedule change hits like a kick in the stomach,” although at least one supporter could be seen holding an England jersey.
In response to earlier events this week, security measures have been heightened outside the hotel. Complaints were lodged by Ecuador’s football federation, prompting increased security throughout the city after four fatalities occurred during celebrations following Mexico’s victory over Ecuador.
England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, is set to face the co-hosts at the iconic Azteca Stadium, with the match scheduled to kick off at 6 PM local time (1 AM Monday in the UK). FIFA had considered moving the kick-off time earlier due to forecasts of storms, but after five-and-a-half hours of deliberation on Friday, the original schedule was confirmed.
Mexico expressed strong opposition to rescheduling the match less than 48 hours before it was set to begin. The English Football Association was reportedly taken aback by the potential change. “We have to change the entire plan. I don’t like it at all.” stated Mexico’s manager, Javier Aguirre. “We have to change the entire plan. I don’t like it at all.”
The challenging atmosphere is not the only hurdle for England, as the Azteca Stadium is situated over 2,000 meters above sea level, requiring players to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels.
Historically, Mexico has been formidable at the Azteca, suffering only two defeats in 89 matches, with 70 victories and 17 draws. They remain unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches at this venue.
