Fifa has initiated an investigation into the violent incidents that erupted following Spain’s World Cup final victory on Sunday, with multiple Argentina players potentially facing suspensions.
Nahuel Molina was seen apparently hitting Spain’s captain Rodri in the stomach as he entered the pitch after the final whistle. Additionally, a significant confrontation occurred at the halfway line, where Leandro Paredes seemed to grab Eric García by the throat before pushing Gavi to the ground.
As a result of these actions, Paredes received a red card from referee Slavko Vincic, who had previously ejected Enzo Fernández near the end of normal time. The referee also issued yellow cards to three other Argentine players along with head coach Lionel Scaloni.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the Fifa World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code (FDC), the Fifa Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” Fifa stated.
Moreover, Fifa is scrutinizing Argentina’s behavior after their semi-final triumph over England, during which players celebrated with a banner declaring “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” which had been smuggled into the Atlanta Stadium by fans.
Fifa prohibits any political statements from players or teams, meaning those involved could face bans as a consequence.
