Organic Flower Power Tea Room

You could be in the souk in old Marrakesh, but this is Berkeley Road, Dublin 7. The delicate aroma of fragrant tea greets visitors on stepping through the cheery yellow door of the Organic Flower Power Tea Room – a new venture along a road better know for Harley Davidson showrooms than Moroccan-style refreshment rooms. And the genteel products on offer at No 9 are not just any common or garden brews. Strawberry-and-champagne-flavoured tea, anyone? Or how about an energising Mojito Blue, or Maté Elixir of Youth?

Like a good wine, the initial pleasure is in the aroma, and owner Michaela Cihlarova encourages visitors to sniff the lids on top of the neat rows of tall glass jars containing the loose teas. There are 140 varieties from which to choose (or infuse). The fragrance helps inform your choice, and while some of the jars contain traditional-looking leaves, many look like pot pourri with their dried petals, berries and herbs.

Some teas are in the form of tightly compacted flowers which slowly open when the hot water is poured in the cup. Also on sale are 20 varieties of coffee bean, jars of honey, teapots and Oriental-style tea sets. To the rear of the shop is where the whole Moroccan thing is going on.

Three separate seating areas, just behind drifting organza panels, are fitted with low tables, Indian leather stools, and banquettes or couches scattered with silk cushions.

As Michaela explains, this experience is meant to be less frenzied than the normal downing of a hasty cuppa with a tea bag still floating in it.

"The idea is to come in and take it easy, get rid of the stress of the day. If you want, you can bring in your laptop, but the emphasis is on taking some time out."

As she speaks, a couple take their tea, and complimentary chocolates, in one of the seating areas, which is dominated by a large wall mural. The woman takes out her knitting as her companion pours the tea. Beyond this area is a tiny courtyard garden sheltered with tall potted palms. It's probably not a concession to a smoking area though, as Michaela is very insistent on the healthy aspect of her teas.

But her partner Pat, who co-runs the shop, says they might install a hookah pipe and some sweet tobacco just for fun out there, and to further enhance the Moroccan mood.

North Africa aside, Michaela says the concept of the tea room, and drinking organic tea, is very much the norm in her native Czech Republic. Most of the product on sale comes from Japan, China, Nepal and India. There are ayurvedic teas, detox teas, even a "virile man tea".

The Sunday Tribune samples pick-me-up guarana tea – but with an enquiring eye on another jar labelled Flat Belly. Michaela explains that the waist-trimming potential of that particular brand must be backed up with healthy eating and regular exercise to gain a real benefit.

Never mind; maybe there's more pleasure to be had in indulging in new arrivals coming soon –the shop will introduce richly indulgent hot chocolate from Italy, some of which will be mixed with meringue or pistachio.

Whatever your choice of beverage, in this unlikely corner of Dublin 7 it looks like it will always be time for tea.
