Bruce Willis in 'Surrogates'

Surrogates

(Jonathan Mostow): Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe. Running time: 89 minutes

Rating: 2/5(12A)

Bruce Willis is looking fab in Surrogates, a sci-fi thriller set in 2017. He seems 20 years younger, his skin is plastic smooth and he's got hair again. Oh wait, that's his surrogate we're looking at, a robot designed to do everything for his character Greer instead. The real Greer, an FBI agent, stays at home, like everybody else in the world, where they live vicariously through their surrogates with goggles on their eyes in a kind of virtual reality. The trouble for Greer is the case he is investigating – the murder of a college student – forces him to go out into the real world.

Jonathan Mostow's film, based on the graphic novel by Robert Venditti, may well have been written and directed by surrogates. It's lifeless and predictable.

It's the kind of film where somebody gets to save something very important by pressing a button at the very last second.

When the real Willis emerges, he looks old and haggard. He must be getting tired of these thin thrillers. Radha Mitchell co-stars as Greer's FBI partner.
