SINCE everyone from Keane to the Killers wants to sound like Simple Minds right now, it was only a matter of time before Jim Kerr and co followed suit. Having spent most of this decade in experimental mode, their 15th studio album sounds like the record they should have made in 1989. Comeback single 'Rockets' is irresistible pop-rock, while 'Stars Will Lead The Way' and numerous others revive the old '80s trick of a vocal verse over sparing rhythms followed by kerranging guitar/synth chorus to surprisingly good effect. It's all utterly formulaïc and meaningless, but at least half of this album stands up to Simple Minds' best.
