With the whole retail market now chasing the same middle-earning euro, lines are blurring between high street and designer. So while designers launch diffusion lines, the traditionally cheaper stores are upping their game to get a bite of the same cherry. New Look launched its 'Idol' collection last year. This year it's back, and filled with the sort of items you are more used to seeing at All Saints or Reiss. From sequinned dresses and velvet trousers to Nordic knits and belted fur jackets, these items are priced a little higher than the normal New Look offering. This tee-shirt dress sums up the gypsy-cool feel of the collection; it is €25 and in all New Look stores now.
Forget your harems and super skinnies, because the new trend in jeans is all about the baggy turn-up. (Think Madonna in 'Papa Don't Preach' era). These ones by Junya Watanabe are seriously covetable – and come with a suitably gulp-worthy price tag of €430 at Havana , Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
Grab your trench coat, headscarf and kitten heels and get into the '50s' feel that pervades so much of fashion for the new season. These bat shades by Friis are very Gwynnie in The Talented Mr Ripley and down to €15 in the sale at www.doo-lally.com.
* Now that skinny Mark Ronson-inspired suits and drainpipe Russell Brand-like jeans have become de rigueur, men are starting to face what women have always had to cope with – VPL (visible pants line). Before you're tempted to go commando, M&S has come to the rescue with its first slim-fit 'R-Pants'. Priced €16 for two, they launch early September and are just the thing to look streamlined in skinnier silhouettes,
* '50s-inspired Irish label Charlotte and Jane has just launched its new A/W collection. A kind of 'Princess Grace goes to the West of Ireland' collection – think wool mix suits and dresses – the designer duo also do a 'tween' range for confirmations and special occasions. Available at Willow in Newbridge, Divine in Maynooth and Malahide and Sola in Bantry. See www.charlotteandjane.com.
* August is 'fashion month' at the Jervis Shopping Centre where every Saturday DJs, fashion shows and live mannequins will bring a bit of a festival vibe to the inner city. Ay carumba!
