And so the great back-to-school countdown begins. In the main, shopping for school stuff is not a lot of fun for anybody involved but you can liven up proceedings significantly by picking with the Dreamland lunch bag (€10) and the Dreamland aluminium water bottle (€6.75) available from Paperchase, Arnotts. An explosion of rosettes, Matryoshka dolls and cupcakes, it will guarantee they'll look forward to lunchtime, whatever sort of sandwiches you've packed for them.
One of life's great unexplained mysteries is why fashion fixates on a particular motif every season, which can be anything from cherries to butterflies. Right now, it's the year of the horse, as seen dangling from necklaces or emblazoned on tees. We really like this cardigan from Monsoon (€70). Called the 'cheval', which sounds a lot chicer than plain 'horse', it has vintage-style buttons and cropped, puffed sleeves. We would suggest you don't team it with riding boots, which might be equestrian overkill.
Our long-standing obsession with scented candles has proved to be an expensive little habit, and not without incident – the fear of leaving the house without blowing them out first is ever present. Irish candle company Max Benjamin has introduced its new fragrance diffusers and we think they're the way forward. There are no flames involved (they're also alcohol-free and have reduced allergen levels) and they're easy to use – you insert rattan reeds into scented oil and the fragrance is released for up to four months. There's a choice of French Linen Water (our favourite), Dodici, Lemongrass & Ginger and Cloves & Cinnamon scents, they cost €25 and they're available from Brown Thomas.
YSL's new polishes for autumn come in a range of sumptuous colours and offer double the fun. The limited-edition Manucure Couture polish duo are striking colour combinations with an angled brush that allow you to get a French manicure with a difference, so if you pick up Belle de Jour, pictured here, you could have a turquoise base with a purple tip, or vice versa. Oh so pretty and available countrywide from 21 August, €35.
* We're loving... sweaters
This season's knits must be fitted, a little bit retro and very sexy – which sums up this animal-print version from Next, €34.
* We're not sure about... tan tights
They might be back from years in the fashion wilderness but there are times when no matter how on-trend something is, you must say no. This is one of those occasions.
* We're reading... 'Composed' by Roseanne Cash
Johnny's daughter's memoirs about growing up with a musical legend is one of our favourite reads of the year so far.
* We're lusting after... Tory Burch
We would like anything by Tory this season but most especially this tasselled and terribly cool messenger bag. €430 from net-a-porter.com.
