FINE Gael councillor Bill Tormey has defended using his blog to host an extract of a 'player's' approach to chatting up the fairer sex, insisting it does not objectify women.
The outspoken medic and politician insists the piece, entitled 'Why the Player is Successful with Women', simply paints a true picture of life and the behaviour of men.
The extract, written by "dating coach" David Curtis, author of Get Women Like a Bad Boy Without Being a Jerk, appeared on Tormey's website recently with the addendum: 'Players, bad boys and women (notes for Young Fine Gael if anyone meets a stunning Ógra!)'.
But the colourful consultant said it was simply a humorous reflection of life.
"I think it's absolutely spot on and accurate. It's real life. It's culturally accurate [that] different people behave in different ways. It's social Darwinism," he said.
The extract on preferable approaches to women theorises how regular men put so much pressure on themselves that they "either lose their nerve or totally blow it".
A player, however, "doesn't get too excited or worked up… she is just one in a string of hot women he is connecting with on a regular basis".
Defending the piece's outlook on the opposite sex, Tormey pointed to his record on espousing the treatment of women across a variety of cultures.
"I have lampooned Portmarnock Golf Club for its policy on being anti-women. They are a boys' club, not a man's club, because only boys would be anti-women," he said.
Tormey has used his blog to address a diverse selection of issues. Aside from considerable focus on politics, the website has recently addressed the comedian Tommy Cooper's contribution to the world's best jokes, the management of Mountjoy jail, and has been used to host numerous videos of musical performances from Ella Fitzgerald to Tina Turner.
"The internet is entertainment. It is insight and entertainment and it challenges people. This [extract] is bang on," he said.
"It's because I'm a polymath. I'm not only interested in local politics and medicine, I am interested in life.
"I am a debunker of myth and I will always change my mind if I am shown to be incorrect."
